No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
