As any prominent honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
